Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Sapper Lionel Albert Turner (Service No:7446) enlisted in the AIF on 25 January 1916 and was attached to 8th Field Company Engineers on 31 March 1916 when his Unit embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Star of Victoria for Tel el Kebir en route to Marseilles. Sapper Turner was KiA in France on 20 October 1917. Personal effects returned to his wife were a wallet, post cards, photos and letters. Siblings Charles and Frank (KiA in France in 1918) also served in WWI.

Lionel was born in Carrick, Tasmania in 1889, seventh of eleven children of John Charles Turner (b1852 at Port Fairy, Victoria) and Sarah Elizabeth Smith (b1953 in New Norfolk, Tasmania). John (a Labourer) and Sarah (a Dressmaker) married in 1877 in Longford, Tasmania and lived in Carrick, Rosedale, Westbury and Launceston where they raised their family and John was a Labourer. By 1919 they had settled in Melbourne, where John worked as a Cook.

Lionel worked as a Miner in Beaconsfield and in 1909 in Launceston married Lillian Crawford (b1890 in Launceston, Tasmania). Lionel and Lillian settled in Launceston where Lionel was a Bicycle Mechanic when he enlisted in the AIF. Following Lionel's death, Lillian remained in Launceston where she later remarried and died in 1956.
