Private Maurice Stephen Atwell (Service No:V6777) enlisted in the ACMF on 15 April 1941. He served with 7th Infantry Battalion in Darwin, NT (22 February 1942 - 26 September 1943) and in Lae, and Munda and Treasury Islands, and Torokina. Private Atwell was attached to 7th Infantry battalion at Discharge on 1 April 1946. He was one of six siblings (Cliff, Harold, Albert, Walter and Cyril) who served in WWII.
Maurice was born in Rainbow, Victoria in 1915, fourth of twelve children of George Alfred Atwell (b1884 in Templars, South Australia) and Amy Eleanor Rogers (b1888 in East Cannum, Victoria). George (a Farmer) and Amy married in 1909 in Rainbow where they settled and raised their family and George was a Farmer.
Maurice worked as a Labourer in Rainbow prior to his enlistment in the ACMF. Following his Discharge, he worked as a Station Hand at Hamilton and Willaura, where abt 1950 he married Kathleen Lyla Adams/Campbell (b1916). Maurice and Kathleen lived in Willaura until the late 1950s when they settled at Nareen, Harrow where they raised their family and Maurice was a Farmer until retiring to Portland in the late 1970s. Maurice died in 1990 and Kathleen in 1999.
