Fred was the youngest of five children of Walter Smart (b1880 in Ararat, Victoria) and Alice Sophia Blake (b1889 in Ararat, Victoria). Walter - a Bricklayer - and Alice married in 1909 in Ararat, Victoria where they settled and raised their family.
Fred was a Apprentice Hairdresser when he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V240316) and was attached to 38th Infantry battalion when he was Discharged on 4 October 1942 to transfer to the Australian Army. Fred served as a Private (Service No:VX113368) with 28th and 38th Infantry Battalions and 3 Australian Base Ordnance Depot. He was at Adelaide River in the Northern Territory (26 June 1943 - 23 December 1944) and in New Briton (24 December 1944 - 14 February 1946) and was Discharged in August 1946. Brother Sydney Walter (Sapper; Service No:VX71284) and Cousins Mervyn Goulbourne Smart (Sergeant; RAAF Service No:401397), Harold James Smart (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:56560), Leslie Raymond Smart (Trooper; Service No:VX77231) and Henry Roy Smart (Flying Officer; Service No:428266) also served in WWII.
In 1947 Fred was a Hairdresser in Ararat, Victoria when he married Jocelyn Beatrice Millington (b1924 in Ararat, Victoria). They settled at Wannon, Victoria where Fred was a Hairdresser before relocating to Melbourne. Fred died in 1988.
