Harold was the son of Henry and Elisabeth Mackereth [nee Stephens]. Harold
and his unit were sent from Dover to France on 1 April 1918, after having left
Melbourne on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 30 October 1917 and disembarked
at Devonport, England on 27 December. On 21 September he sustained a
severe gunshot wound to his thumb and was sent to hospital in Birmingham,
England for further treatment. With the war terminated Harold returned to
Australia on the Margha on 18 January 1919, arriving at Adelaide on 28
February and being discharged on 22 March.
