Enlisted: 29 January 1940, He must have become frustrated with being an aircraft guard at a training college. In May 1941 he went AWOL (subsequently listed as "deserted"), went to Syney and enlisted in the Army under an assumed name (Johnson?) and served in N.Africa and Pacific theatres. In 1944 he confessed to the Army, changed back to Crockford by Deed Poll, and continued on. Following discharge he faced a prospective desertion charge but the RAAF chose to discharge him as at his AWOL date.
