Sergeant Joseph Gero
Sergeant Joe Gero served in The New Guinea Campaign from 18 May 1942 until 6 August 1944. He served under Captain Bruce Robinson, AAMC, AIF. Sergeant Gero was medically trained in Hungary, his country of birth, and assisted CMO Robinson with medical procedures, in the field hospital. Like many in PNG he succumbed to malaria. And like many returned soldiers he didn’t speak of the war. Based in Sydney post war, my father moved his young family to Tamworth in 1945 to start a new life, establishing himself as a physiotherapist in his own practice.
