Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 7th June 1917, Private William Symington, referred to as Willie and Billie, 35th Battalion (Signaller, Reg No-1697), salesman (David Cohen & Company), from Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales and Merewether, N.S.W., was Killed in Action at the Battle of Messines, age 20 years 8 months. Cause of death unknown.

No Roll of Honour circular summited.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at Broken Hill, New South Wales on the 24th October 1896 to Robert (died 31.1.1955, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 86), from "West Brae", Lake Macquarie, New South Wales? (1917) and Rothbury Colliery, Branxton, N.S.W. and 40 Maud Street, Belmont, N.S.W., and Frances Sophia Symington (Frank, died 12.5.1947, Belmont, N.S.W., age 79, mother of 5), from Rothbury Colliery, Branxton, New South Wales and 40 Maud Street, Belmont, N.S.W., Willie enlisted on the 29th January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Mr. Symington’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 25), Belgium.
Place of Association – Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, Australia.

Willie’s name has also been inscribed on the Book of Gold, Catherine Hill Bay War Memorial, Catherine Hill Bay Roll of Honour, Catherine Hill Bay Honour Roll of Soldiers, Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and the Merewether St. Augustine's Church Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the Symington gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of Willie’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country.
