Born in Kalgoorlie, WA where his father was stationed as a Police Constable, John was the second of three children of Alexander (Alec) Edwin Wilson (b1897 in Perth WA) and Margaret Martin Hunter (b1895 in Lanarkshire, Scotland). Alec and Margaret married in 1914 in Fremantle WA and then lived in Police Quarters in Meekatharra and Kalgoorlie in WA where Alec was a Police Constable. Following Margaret's death in childbirth in 1921 Alec moved back to Fremantle WA. In 1930 he married Dorothy (Dot) Alma Whelan (b1912 in New Norcia, WA) and the couple settled in Fremantle where Alec worked as a Mattress Maker.

John was working as a Polisher in Perth WA in October 1940 when he enlisted in the Australian Army. He was a Lieutenant (Service No:WX8928) attached to 2/11 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in December 1945.

In 1943 John married Edna May Carey (b1921 in Perth WA) - Edna worked as a cashier and Clerk before enlisting in the ACMF in 1943 (Gunner; Service No:WF3030). The couple settled in Fremantle WA, where John worked as a Polisher. He died in 1987 and Edna in 1992.
