Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When Alfred Richard Wooley enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. A. Wooley, Gilberton, South Australia.
Alfred Richard Wooley was born on 26 Sep 1868 at Adelaide, a son to William Wooley and Ann Wooley (nee Durbridge). He married Caroline Elizabeth Long in 1906 in Queensland and they had 5 children. When he enlisted in 1914 for WW1 they were living in Cairns where he was working as a labourer.
When he passed in 1920 an obituary published in The Cairns Post, 23 Mar 1920, noted he arrived in Cairns in 1906. Prior to that he had spent time in Broken Hill and Chillagoe. He was an accomplished sportsman and was part of the committee formed to establish a Rest and Recreation Home for Cairns Soldiers and remained an active member of the returned services association. Prior to his passing he was employed as an Assistant Inspector of Nuisances with the Cairns Town Council.
