Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Eldest of three brothers (John, Ben and Laurie) who served in WWII, Private John Reginald Crane (Service Nos:N201910/NX111788) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 1 April 1942 with 18th Battalion. Private Crane served in New Guinea (13 October 1942 - 24 September 1943) with 2/7 Infantry Battalion and 2/1 Guard Regiment, enlisting in the AIF 'in the field' at St Ives Camp in NSW on 19 April 1944. Private Crane completed a second tour in New Guinea with 2/7 Infantry Battalion (11 November 1944 - 18 December 1945), and was attached to 2/7 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 10 May 1946.

The eldest of nine children, John was born in Gundagai, New South Wales in 1917 to Charles (Harry) Henry George Crane (b1896 in Gundagai, New South Wales) and Ada Muriel Blanche Crane (b1897 in Gundagai, New South Wales). Harry and Ada married in 1916 in Gundagai, and settled at Darbalara via Gundagai, where they raised their family and Harry was a Dairy Farmer. In 1947 Harry purchased the property 'Fairview' in the Blowering Valley via Tumut, where he was a Grazier until his death the next year.

John was a Farm Labourer/Dairy Farmer with his father at Darbalara via Gundagai in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following Discharge, John was a Farmer at 'Fairfield' in Blowering via Tumut in 1948 when he married Mona Joan Eggleton (b1930 in Tumut, New South Wales). John and Mona settled in Blowering via Tumut, where they raised their family and John was a Farmer. In the late 1960s John and Mona moved to Holbrook, where John was a Farmer, and then in the early 1970s to Adelong where he was an Overseer. John died in 1992 and Mona in 2002.
