Herbert Stephen Smith, born on the 16 January 1896 in Mildura, fought in the 32nd Australian Infantry Battalion. His service number was 3631. He passed away on the 17 March 1980 at the age of 84 and is now resting in Renmark Cemetery. He was a fruit grower in his hometown of Renmark. He was single at the time of enlistment and had a close relationship with his mum, Mrs. Mabel Smith. He enlisted on April 19, 1916 at the age of 19 and 3/4. for medals and honours he achieved a victory award and a British War Medal. The unit he embarked with was from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on 12 August 1916, Adelaide.
He was badly wounded in the forearm in fighting near Ypres on 25 October 1917. After some time recovering in England, he returned to Australia for medical discharge in early 1918.
