Private Archibald Joseph Webster (Service No:TX2784) enlisted in the AIF on 1 July 1940, and was attached to 2/40th Infantry Battalion on 8 December 1941 when he embarked with his Unit from Darwin for Koepang, Timor. Transferred to 2/2 Independent Coy/Commando Battalion in 1942, Private Webster embarked from Timor for Darwin on 18 January 1943. He was attached to 2/12th Infantry Battalion on 17 August 1943 when he embarked with his Unit from Townsville for Port Moresby on board Katoomba, and on 12 May 1944 embarked from Lae for Brisbane on board Sea Flasher. Private Webster was attached to 2/40th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 17 October 1945.
Archie was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1914, second of four children of Charles Robert Webster (b1885 in Oatlands, Tasmania) and Hester May Phillips (b1881 in Campbell Town, Tasmania). Charles (Police Constable; No:55) and Hester married in Hobart abt 1907, and lived there, in Tunbridge via Oatlands and in New Town, where they raised their family and Charles was a Police Trooper, and was also appointed Inspector of Stock in 1917. Charles retired from the Police Force in the early 1920s and the family settled in Moonah, where Charles worked as a Labourer.
Archie was working as a Labourer in Moonah when he enlisted in the AIF in 1940, and in Hobart in 1943 married Gertrude (Gertie) Constance Jackman (b1914 in Launceston, Tasmania) - Gertie was working in Moonah as a Factory Assistant. Following his Discharge from the Army in 1945, Archie and Gertie settled in Moonah, where they raised their family and Archie was a Labourer. In the 1960s Archie and Gertie moved to Huonville, where Archie was a Zinc Worker until his death in 1981. Gertie died in 2004.
