Sergeant Richard John Anderson (Service No:VX115777) was 'in the field' in Darwin NT with 8th Infantry Battalion when he enlisted in the AIF on 14 August 1942. Private Anderson initially served in the AMCF (Service No:V24108) with 8th Infantry Battalion and was in Darwin when he Discharged on 13 August 1942 to enlist in the AIF. Private Anderson served in Darwin NT with 8th Infantry Battalion from 8 February 1942 to 18 September 1943, and embarked from Cairns for Lae on board the Van Der Lijn on 12 May 1944. Promoted to Corporal in September 1944, he served with 8th Infantry Battalion in New Guinea and Bougainville from 12 May 1944 to 1 August 1945. Sergeant Anderson served with 20 Australian Works Coy in December 1945 and was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 2 April 1946.

Born in Beaufort, Victoria in 1922, Richard was second of seven children of William James Anderson Snr (b1892 in Beaufort, Victoria) and Emily Lyons (b1893 in Waterloo via Beaufort, Victoria). William was a Farmer in Trawalla in 1920 when he and Emily married in Beaufort. William had served in WWI (AIF; Private; Service No:304) and had worked as an Attendant in a Hospital for the Insane and as a Labourer. William and Emily lived in Trawalla and Brewster where they raised their family and William was a Farmer. William also served with the ACMF in WWII (Service No:V240786).

Richard was a Shearer in Trawalla when he enlisted in the Army and following his Discharge returned to Trawalla where he was a Farm Labourer in 1950 when he married Alice Mary Glenister (b1923 in Beaufort, Victoria). Richard and Alice settled in Pura Pura, Mortlake, Victoria where they raised their family and Richard was Farmer. Alice died in 1994 and Richard in 1996.
