My Grandad
I knew of all of 4.5 years. He had one leg that a crocodile bit off in the war ( that's what he told me,).
Had a 1971 XY Fairmont, put a fake diamond (well it's the thought), in the blinker for nan.
Not sure if he was much of a Soldier as his records suggest he lost his medals a few times while trying to find his beer.
I don't think he was Infantry long. We have a picture of him next to a wreck mech Truck in a Rabaul.
He joined late in the war, so Pacific in Rabaul & Bougainville.
We Blakes are cheeky characters & Grandad was a funny man.
Not a bad gig though, join army & drive a recovery vehicle around, still a pretty damned good role now. Either engineers or RAEME, can't go wrong there.
Like everyone else, they held onto them for a period after the war, so the Commonwealth could build a professional standing army, then they were force discharged if they didn't already leave.
