Private Leslie James Hegarty (Service No:WX40089) initially enlisted in the ACMF (Service No:W94178) on 6 July 1943 before enlisting with the AIF on 15 July 1943. Private Hegarty served with 35 Infantry Training Battalion, 29/46 Infantry Battalion and 42nd Infantry Battalion in Bougainville (1 December 1944 - 1 June 1946). He was attached to 42nd Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged on 15 July 1946.

Born in 1924 in Perth WA, Leslie was the third of four children of Daniel (Jack) Patrick Hagerty (b1893 in Toodyay, WA) and Helena Grace Jones (b1901 in Greenough, WA). Jack was a Porter and Shunter with WAGR in Northam and Doodlakine, and was in Geraldton in 1921 when he and Helena married. The family lived in Kalgoorlie, Fremantle, Collie, Katanning, Mullewa and Merredin where Jack worked for WAGR as a Shunter and Guard. Following his death in 1932, Helena settled in Perth with the family.

Leslie worked as a Tin Smith and Cannister Hand in Perth WA prior to his enlistment. He settled in Kalgoorlie WA following Discharge, where he worked as a Labourer and in 1949 married Doris May. By 1963 Leslie and Doris were separated and both living in Perth, where Leslie was a Labourer until his death in 1989.
