Died on this date – 3rd July…… Private Charles Godden was born in 1894 at Duddon, Broughton in Furness, Lancashire, England.

According to information provided by his mother for the Roll of Honour – Charles Godden came to Australia in 1914. He had been a member of the Hertfordshire Territorials. Charles Godden, aged 20, was a passenger on Miltiades which had departed from the port of London, England & arrived in Australia on 14th September, 1914.

Charles Godden enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 4th November, 1916 at Lismore, NSW as a 23 year old, single, Farmer from Terranora, NSW.
Private Charles Godden, Service number 3039, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 7th February, 1917 (as per Embarkation Roll, however the Statement of Service form recorded he embarked from Melbourne, on H.M.A.T. Ballarat (A70) on 19th February, 1917) with the 42nd Infantry Battalion, 7th Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 11th April, 1917.

He was marched in to A.I.F. Details at Fovant, Wiltshire, England on 11th April, 1917 from Australia. On 23rd April, Private Godden was marched out from Details at Fovant & into 11th Training Battalion at Durrington, Wiltshire.

On 23rd July, 1917 Private Godden proceeded overseas to France via Southampton from 11th Training Battalion at Larkhill. He was marched in to 3rd A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Rouelles, France on 24th July, 1917. Private Godden was marched out from A.D.B.D. on 8th August, 1917 to join his Unit & was taken on strength of 42nd Battalion in the Field on 11th August, 1917 from 7th Reinforcements.

He was on furlough to England from 3rd March, 1918 & rejoined his Unit on 21st March, 1918.

Private Charles Godden was wounded in action on 28th May, 1918. He was admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance on 28th May, 1918 with mustard gas then transferred & admitted to 55th Casualty Clearing Station on 30th May, 1918. Private Godden was discharged from Casualty Clearing Station on 15th July, 1918 & rejoined his Unit from wounded on 22nd July, 1918.

On 17th August, 1918 Private Godden was appointed Lance Corporal. He was appointed Corporal from 13th September, 1918

Corporal Charles Godden, “C” Company, 42nd Battalion, requested in writing, that he revert to rank of Private at his own request. The request was approved & Corporal Godden reverted to the rank of Private from 23rd October, 1918.

Private Godden was transferred from 42nd Battalion to 41st Battalion on 23rd October, 1918. He was taken on strength of 41st Battalion the same day.

He was granted UK Leave from 10th February, 1919 & rejoined his Battalion from Leave on 27th February, 1919.

On 14th April, 1919 Private Godden was admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance for an XRay to 4th finger of right hand. He was transferred & admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital in France for an Xray on 14th April, 1919. Private Godden was transferred to Ambulance Train 9 & embarked for England on 29th April, 1919.

He was admitted to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, Kent, England on 30th April, 1919 with a fractured finger on right hand. The Hospital Admissions form recorded fractured left finger & Neurasthenia. He was transferred to The County of Middlesex War Hospital, Napsbury, St. Albans on 15th June, 1919 with Acute Mania

Private Charles Godden died at 1.45 pm on 3rd July, 1919 at County of Middlesex War Hospital, Napsbury, St. Albans, England from Acute delirious Mania.
He was buried in in “Old Mawling Churchyard, Lewes, Sussex” – now listed as St. Michael’s Churchyard, South Malling, East Sussex, England and has a Private Headstone. His death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
