Corporal Arthur George Vowles (Service No:V240042) enlisted in the Army on 2 June 1941 as a Private attached to 8th Battalion, and on 27 December 1941 Private Vowles was attached to 30 Infantry Brigade when he embarked from Sydney for Port Moresby. Transferred to 55/53 Infantry Battalion in 1942, Private Vowles embarked from Port Moresby for Townsville on 20 March 1943 on board HS Katoomba. Private Vowles served on Thusday Island (30 June 1944 - 1 August 1944) and was a Corporal when he embarked from Brisbane for Bougainville on 6 December 1944 on board the Sea Snipe. Corporal Vowles served in Bougainville, Torokina and Rabaul until 13 January 1946 and was attached to 55/53 Battalion at Discharge on 30 January 1946.
Arthur was born in Ballan, Victoria in 1920, eldest child of Albert Thomas Vowles (b1895 in Waterloo, Victoria) and Isabella Cousins (b1893 in Shelbourne, Victoria). Albert (a Farmer) and Isabella married in 1919 in Maryborough, Victoria - Albert had served in WWI (Private; Service No:1782). Albert and Isabella settled in Beaufort wnere they raised their family and Albert worked as a Farmer, Labourer and Linesman.
Arthur worked as a Station Hand and Boundary Rider at Stoneleigh Estate via Beaufort prior to enlisting in the Army, and in 1943 in Beaufort married Susannah (Nell) Ellen McGregor (b1920 in Beaufort, Victoria). Following his service in WWII, Arthur and Nell settled in Beaufort where they raised their family and Arthur worked as a Linesman and Labourer. Nell died in 1999 and Arthur in 2000.
