Biography contributed by John Oakes

Albert REID (Service Number 10294) was born on 29th January 1895 at Surry Hills. He first worked for the NSW Railways Traffic Branch as a temporary junior porter from 4th May 1915 in the Sydney District. He was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces on 5th October 1915.
He enlisted at Holdsworthy on 12th October giving his ‘Trade or Calling’ as ‘Railway Worker’ and his mother, Mrs Reid of McIntyre St, Gordon, as his next of kin. He was allotted to the 2nd Division Ammunition Column. He embarked HMAT ‘Berrima’ at Sydney on 17th December 1916 and reached Egypt at the end of January 1917. In March he proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front in France though Alexandria and Marseilles. In May he was transferred to the 22nd Field Artillery Brigade. At the end of September, he was taken on the strength of the 7th Field Ambulance, while still formally attached to the 22nd Field Ambulance.  He seems to have served with the Field Ambulance in several differently numbered units for the rest of 1917,.

He was killed in action on 28th December 1917. Gunner J B Rann (4891) stated:
‘ I saw him killed at Messines. He was caught by pieces of shell, which hit him about the back and head, death being instantaneous. We had just finished tea, and he was in his dug-out, when the shell caught him.’

He was buried by Rev C H Edwards, who was Chaplain attached to the 6th Brigade, at G7114 Dranoutre Cemetery: Sh. 28 S.W. M.35 D.65, 2½ miles NNE of Bapaume.

A pension of 34/- per fortnight was granted to his mother Jane Reid from 7th March 1918.
