One of four brothers (Frank, Jack, Edward and Frederick) who served in WWII, Private Jack Thomas Smith (Service Nos:V214402/VX139096) initially served in the ACMF (16 August 1940 - 3 December 1942) as a Trooper with 38th Infantry Battalion and 17th Light Horse (MG) Regiment before enlisting 'in the field' in the AIF on 4 December 1942. Private Smith marched out to 30 Australian Works Coy on 17 April 1945, and served in Morotai from 4 June 1945 to 17 December 1945. Private Smith was attached to 4 Australian Labour Group at Discharge on 9 January 1946.

Jack was born in Melbourne in 1919, second of four children of Philip (Paddy) John Smith (b1889 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Elsie May Gorman (b1895 in Wangaratta, Victoria). Paddy was a Labourer in 1910 when he and Elsie married in Shepparton. Paddy served in the AIF (Private; Service Nos:513/4494) and following his Discharge, he and Elsie settled at Kyabram, where they raised their family and Paddy was a Farmer/Orchardist.

Jack was working in Shapparton as a Labourer in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1944 in Adelaide he married Alice (Josie) Josephine Pool (b1922 in Gloucestershire, England) - Josie immigrated in 1924, arriving in Adelaide with her parents on board the Baradine, and was a Tailor in Hindmarsh before enlisting in the Army (Private; Service No:Sf84173). Josie was Discharged in 1945 and Jack in 1946 - Jack and Josie settled in Kyabram, where they raised their and Jack worked as a Farmer and Orchardist, and later as a Carpenter.
