Son of Sydney Arthur and Elizabeth Jane (nee Harvie) Catford of Appila, SA; brother of Ray (Roy) Harvie Catford, Winifred Merle Catford, Arthur Edward Catford, Beryl Ellizabeth Catford, Lorna Jean Catford who served in the Army from 1942-1946 and Sydney Arthur Catford

Plane was Tempest EJ873 which took off from Glize-Rijen at 11.25am to sweep over enemy territory but disappearred in the Bentheim area which was covered in heavy cloud and was never heard from again

He had over 418 hours flying experience including nearly 82 hours of night flying

He had preiviously flown Wirraway, Bomerang and Kittyhawks

Medals: 1939-45 Star, Flying Badge (13 October 1942)

Had 10 experience working with Deisel and Spark ignition engines
