Frank left Australia with the 50th Battalion on 23 October 1916 on board HMT Port Melbourne. On 13 March 1917 he was admitted to Sutton Veny Hospital and listed as “seriously ill’. However, further details of the nature of his condition were not provided in his file. His unit went to France on 26 March 1918. Frank was shot in the left shoulder during action in France on 11 August 1918 and was sent to Beaufort War Hospital in England the next week. Frank returned to Australia on the Ceramic on 25 January 1919 and was discharged on 21 April.
