Herbert wa born in 1890 in Portland. He was the 2nd son of John & Mary Pill (nee Mathews)of Portland, and brother to Clara, Lucy, William, Stanley, Eva, Ina, Iima, Nicholas & Jacob.
Herberts brother Nicholas also enlisted in 1917, and returned home safely.
Herbert was 24 years when his unit embarked from Adelaide in South Australia, on board the HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 12th August 1916. Herbert returned to Australia 3rd July 1917.
