Son of Harry Olley and Frances Charlotle Olley nee Martin of Oakleigh, Victoria.

Brother of Albert Arthur Olley who was killed in action on 25 November 1916 while serving with 4th Machine Gun Battalion and is buried in the Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs.

Served his four year carpentry apprenticeship with H. Miller of Ascot Vale, Victoria.

Husband of Winifred Annie Olley nee Coghlan of St Leonard's Road, Ascot Vale, Victoria. Charles and Winifred married during 1915c in Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia on 19 June 1919 aboard  HT Miltiades diembarking on 5 August 1919
