Harry left Australia on board HMAT Miltiades on 7 February 1916 and after spending a brief period serving at Alexandria he was sent with the 50th Battalion to France on 12 June. On 2 June 1918 he was treated in the field for pyrexia. On 3 September Harry was court-martialled for desertion and sentenced to 3 years penal servitude. The sentence was suspended due to Harry’s low mental deficiency and on 17 October he was transferred to the Australian Working Party where he served out the remainder of the war. Harry returned to Australia on the Karoo on 28 March 1919.
