Athol was the youngest of five children of Alfred Charles Willey (b1876 in Beverley, WA) and Janet Bridget Marley (b1876 in Hotham, Melbourne, Victoria). Alfred (a Farmer in Spring Valley, Beverley, WA) and Janet married in 1906 in Perth WA. The couple settled in Beverley WA where they raised their family and Alfred was a Farmer.

Athol was a Farm Hand in 1939 when he married Gladys May McQuade (b1922 in York, WA). Athol and Gladys settled in York where Athol was working as Farm Hand when he enlisted in the ACMF on 14 April 1942. He served as a Gunner (Service No:W38998) and was attached to 3rd Field Coy when he Discharged on 25 July 1942 to enlist in the Australian Army (Private; Service No:WX25485). Athol served with 1st and 32nd Infantry Training Battalions (Corporal) and 5 and 9 LoC Provost Coys. He was attached to 5 LoC Provost Coy when he was Discharged in April 1946.

Athol and Gladys remained in York, WA where Athol worked as a Farm Hand. Gladys died in 2001 and Athol in 2012.
