Percival Arthur Schultz - Q129413 – Wooroolin WW11 Honour Board

Percival Arthur Schultz was born 26 Apr 1922 at Kingaroy, the son of Charles (Carl) and Augusta Schultz. His father was a labourer per the Qld electoral rolls. I wonder if he attended Kingaroy Primary school.
On 7 Jan 1941, 19 year old Percival Schultz was living at Christmas Creek and joined the Australian Army at Beaudesert. He gave his father Charles Schultz of Hodge St, Red Hill, Kingaroy as his next of Kin.
His army records are available on the NAA website and include his photos as well as service records. He served in the 43rd Australian Landing Craft Company and was in New Guinea from May 1945 to Mar 1946. Another lesson on Army units for me. Per Ozatwar.com the functions of Water Transportation units such as the 43rd Landing Craft Company were:-
1. The resupply of essential supplies from principal base ports to forward areas, where there were no roads yet where inshore sea transport was possible
2. The carriage of troops, especially in amphibious assaults
3. The evacuation of wounded.
4. The local carriage of equipment, stores and salvage.
5. Building of minor port facilities, such as jetties and landing stages, to facilitate the operation of inshore water craft.

The AWM website tells us about activities of the 43rd Australian Landing Craft Company during the nineteen months in New Guinea. They were the sole means of transportation between Aitape and But to Wewak. Approximate strength is 60 vessels including 7 fast supply launches. Average tonnage moved per day 700. The unit uses about 21,000 gallons of fuel per month.
At discharge on 23 Aug Percival gave Wooroolin as his home address. His parents Charles & Augusta were living there until the death of Charles in 1951.
Percival and his mother moved to Redgate, near Barambah for a few years before moving to Toowoomba. Percival never married. He died in 1988, aged 66 years, and is buried at Toowoomba Cemetery.
