Ted was born in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1911, eldest of six children of Richard Strange (b1885 at Mason Hill in Laverton, Western Australia) and Ella Bessie Symonds (b1890 in Albany, Western Australia). Richard (a Farmer in Boyadine via Darkan) and Ella married in 1911 in Darkan, and settled in the Boddington region, where they raised their family. Richard was a Timber Hewer at Marradong in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:3469), and following his Discharge, he and Ella settled in Boddington, where Richard worked as a Timber Hewer, Farmer and Labourer. Richard also served in the ACMF in WWII (Private; Service No:W26472).

Ted worked in Boddington as a Labourer before moving to Kalgoorlie, where he was working as a Miner in 1940 when he married Dorothy Joan (aka Joan) Minson (b1921 in Coolgardie, Western Australia). Ted and Joan settled in Kalgoorlie, where they raised their family and Ted worked as a Miner. In the mid 1950s Ted and Joan moved to Esperance, where Ted worked as a Labourer until his death in 1966.
