Private William John Bates (Service No:VX32829) enlisted in the Australian Army on 24 June 1940 and was attached to 2/3 Light Anti Aircraft Ragiment RAA when he was Discharged on 24 January 1946.
Born 1916 in Wonthaggi Victoria, William was the fourth of five children of Percy Alexander Bates (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Clara Crook (b1888 in Darraweit, Victoria). Percy (a Labourer) and Clara married in 1910 in Melbourne, Victoria and lived in Wonthaggi where Percy was a Coal Miner before moving to Melbourne in the early 1930s. Percy worked as a Labourer.
In 1946 in Melbourne, William married Frances Patricia McCarthy. William and Frances lived in Melbourne where William was a Glass Cutter/Glazier until the mid 1950's when Frances moved to NSW and William to Bendigo, Victoria. William died in 1959.
