Gilbert Rosewell Burt was born on the 22nd of April 1880, in Christchurch, New Zealand. He attended a prestigious all boys private school called Waitaki High School which was in the New Zealand town of Oamaru. He later move to New South Wales where he lived for a short time before being imprisoned and, after his release, moving to South Australia. After this on the 8th of September 1915 he decided to enlist in the army. This started off well for him where he trained in Mitcham camp with the 32nd battalion before boarding the HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 12th of August 1916. He arrived in England on 30 September before crossing to France in December 1916.
In mid 1917 Gilbert Rosewell Burt became ill and passed through several hospitals in France and England. On 14 November 1917 he resigned his commission and left the army, apparently with the intention of returning to Australia, travelling with his wife to New Zealand and re-enlisting in the NZEF. There is no indication he ever did so and some letters on his file suggest he behaved improperly whilst in England.
Nothing is known of his later life.
