Private Herbert Murray Herd (Service No:VX133657) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:165502) and was 'in the field' on 14 February 1943 when he joined the AIF. Private Herd served in Darwin (20 September 1943 - 20 December 1944) where he transferred to 112 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment. Private Herd was attached to 159 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment at Discharge on 20 December 1945. Siblings Frank and Jack also serve din WWI.

Murray was born in Geelong, Victoria in 1923, seventh of nine children of Francis (Frank) Oswald Herd Snr (b1882 in Geelong, Victoria) and Maud Cecelia Lamb (b1883 in Geelong, Victoria). Frank Snr (a Dealer) and Maud married in 1913 in Geelong, Victoria where they settled and raised their family and Frank Snr was a Dealer.

Murray worked as a Cattle Buyer in Geelong, and following his Discharge, in 1949 in Geelong he married Margaret Betty Lee (b1927 in Horsham, Victoria). Murray and Margaret lived in Geelong and Sutherland where Murray worked as a Cattle Buyer and Director. Murray died in 1987 and Margaret in 2023.
