John Vincent Standen was born at Birregurra, Victoria in 1889.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 10th March, 1916 as a 26 year old Dairyman from Ballarat, Victoria.

Private Standen, Service number 1910, joined 39th Battalion at the Front on 7th February, 1917.

He was wounded in action on 7th June, 1917. He recovered in France & rejoined his Battalion on 4th August, 1917.

Private Standen was promoted to Lance Corporal on 10th August, 1917.

On 29th September, 1918 Corporal Standen was wounded in action (2nd Occasion) with GSW to right thigh.

He was invalided to England & admitted to 2nd East General Hospital. Brighton, Sussex, England on 5th October, 1918.


Corporal John Vincent Standen died at 09.45 am on 6th November, 1918 from wounds received in action - GSW thigh, fractured femur & Haemorrhage following operation.

He was buried in Hove Old Cemetery, Hove, Sussex, England.
