Warrant Officer II James Andrew Gardner (Service No:WX37318) initially served in the ACMF as a Private (Service No:W90560) with 5 Tank Workshop Coy - classified Fitter. Private Gardner enlisted in the AIF on 5 February 1943 - reclassified Toolmaker - and was promoted that year to Corporal and Sergeant. On 29 November 1944 he was promoted to WOII and served with 5 Base Workshop and 6 Mechanical Equipment Workshop. WOII Gardner completed the Armed Artillery Equipment Course with Distinction at the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in February 1945. WOII Gardner served in New Guinea (Torokina and Bougainville) from 14 May 1945 to 14 December 1945 and was attached to 6 Australian Mechanical Equipment Workshop AEME at Discharge on 20 December 1945.

Born in Kalgoorlie WA in 1914, Jim was second of five children of George Alexander Gardner (b1876 in Deniliquin, NSW) and Rose Mary Mahony (b1893 in Woodend, Victoria). George (a Miner) and Rose (a Waitress) married in 1911 in Kalgoorlie, WA where they settled and raised their family and George worked as a Pressman until his death in 1928. Rose had moved to Fremantle by 1930 when she remarried to James Arthur Compston (WWI; Service No:253).

Jim worked in Coolgardie as a Mechanic and Oxy Welder and in 1934 in Fremantle married Gertrude (Judy) Emily Truran (b1912 in Geraldton, WA). Jim and Judy settled in Kalgoorlie where they raised their family and Jim worked as a Maintenance Engineer. Following Judy's death in 1959, Jim remained in Kalgoorlie and remarried - Audrey Rhoda Martin (b1915 in Boulder, WA) - Audrey worked in Kalgoorlie as a Clerk and Bookkeeper. In the early 1960s Jim and Audrey moved to Rocky Hill Farm in Brookton where Jim was a Farmer. Jim died in 1982 and Audrey in 1989.
