Son of Oscar Van Assche and Ethel Van Assche nee Holroyd of Alma Road, East St Kilda, Victoria. Brother of Ivan Paul Edward Van Assche who returned to Australia on 3 April 1919 having served with the 2nd Divisional Ammunition Column
Commenced return to Australia on 16 March 1918 aboard HT Kanowna disembarking on 22 May 1918
