Ronald served in Darwin and Morotai. In Darwin he worked in the workshop rewinding engines but was pleased when he was appointed the electrician at the hospital although it meant surrendering his rifle as he was not allowed one while working at the hospital. In Darwin there were regular bombings. He was later sent to Moratai near Borneo.
While in Morotai he managed to avoid Malaria in the steamy jungle conditions however two weeks after arriving home from the war he came down with Malaria and suspected Tuberculosis. He spent the next 12 months in a quiet location recovering.
