Elder of two brothers (James and Alexander) who served in WWII, Gunner James Roy Ross (Service Nos:N5509/NX38401) served in the Militia from 1 December 1938 as a Trooper attached to 21st Light Horse Regiment before enlisting in the AIF on 10 July 1941 with 1 Field Training Regiment. Private Ross - graded Driver Mechanic - served in the Middle East (1 November 1941 - 18 February 1942) with 1 Anti Aircraft Regiment - later structured as 2nd/1st Anti Aircraft Regiment. From 1 November 1943 to 11 May 1944 Private Ross served in Papua New Guinea (Oro Bay near Buna) with 3 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, before Discharge on 14 November 1944.
James Jnr was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1919, eldest of three children of James Roy Ross Snr (b1891 in Holbrook, New South Wales) and Florence Ethel McLeish (b1891 in Warren, New South Wales). James Snr worked as an Overseer at Little Billabong, Hillside via Albury and he and Florence married in 1919 in Sydney. The couple settled at Little Billabong via Holbrook, where they raised their family and James Snr was a Grazier.
James was working as a Jackeroo on the family property at Noonbah via Holbrook in 1938 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, James was a Grazier at Noonbah, and in 1945 in Sydney married Margaret Alston Gregg (b1922 in Sydney, New South Wales). James and Margaret settled at Noonbah, where they raised their family and James was a Grazier, and was appointed Trustee of the Public Recreation and Public Hall at Little Billabong. Margaret died in 1974 and James died in 1989.
