Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Walter Henry BEAUMONT, (Service Number 3022) was born at Balmain on 12 July 1880. He was relatively old, at 35 years, for a Great War recruit and was married to Nellie. He had been working for the tramway since 1902, casually employed at first as a conductor, and then permanent from 1904. In 1910 he became a driver.
On 24 September 1915 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces, having already enlisted at Sydney on 24 August giving his wife living at Rozelle as his next of kin. Allotted to the 7th Reinforcements to the 17th Battalion he embarked from Sydney on HMAT ‘Suevic’ on 20 December 1915. After a short time in Egypt he embarked at Alexandria on 15 March for passage to join the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front in France, passing through Marseilles on 23 March. Beaumont was appointed Lance Corporal on 17 April and was reported missing in action on 3 May. This report was upgraded to killed in action on that date at a Court of Enquiry held on 23 November 1917.
Beaumont has no known grave and is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France.
