Private Laurence Gurney (Service Nos:N195724/NX131748) initially served in the ACMF as a Trooper attached to 6th Australian Motor Regiment  - appointed Driver - from 2 December 1941 to 21 September 1942. Private Gurney enlisted in the AIF 'in the field' on 22 September 1942 - graded Fitter - and served in the New Britian Campaign (Jacquinot Bay) from 21 November 1944 to 23 December 1945. He was a Craftsman attached to 3 Australian Mechanised Workshops at Discharge on 10 January 1946. Siblings Bill, Bernie and Lou also served in WWII.

Laurie was born in Cowra, NSW in 1917, second of six children of  William Gurney (b1889 in Boorowa, NSW) and Edith Ann Cooke (b1895 in Nelligen, NSW). William (a Shearer) and Edith married in 1914 in Cowra, NSW and settled in Mandurama, where they raised their family and William was a Shearer.

Laurie worked as a Shearer in Mandurama prior to enlisting in the Army, and in 1946 in Melbourne married Marjorie (Marge) Evelyn, Handley (b1920 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Marge was working in Melbourne as an Overlocker. Laurie and Marge settled in the Gippsland Region - Warragul and then Bairnsdale - where they raised their family and Laurie worked as a Shearer. Laurie died in 2000 and Marge in 2004.
