Sapper Norman Henry Barnes (Service No:VX61397) initially served in the Militia (Private; 39th Battalion) from 26 November 1930 to 25 May 1934 before enlisting in the AIF as a Private on 11 August 1941 - graded Mechanic. Private Barnes served with 6th and 10th Infantry Training Battalions and 22 Coy AASC, and was attached to 13 Maintenance Platoon RAE at Discharge on 29 May 1945.

Norm was born Melbourne, Victoria in 1908, sixth of ten children of Herbert John Barnes (b1876 in Geelong, Victoria) and Jane Evelyn Dickinson (b1876 in Myrtleford, Victoria. Herbert (a Carpenter) and Jane married in 1899 in Mortlake, Victoria where they lived before settling in Melbourne in the early 1900s. Herbert worked as a Carpenter until his death in 1940.

Norm worked in Melbourne as a Carpenter, Mechanic and Nurseryman, and in 1939 married Hilda Alice Telford (b1920 at Apollo Bay, Victoria) - Hilda worked as a Machinist. Following his Discharge from the Army, Norm and Hilda lived in Melbourne where Norm was a Coach Builder. In the early 1950s they moved to Aplollo Bay, where Norm was a Carpenter. Norm and Hilda divorced in the late 1950s - Hilda remarried in 1960 and Norm settled at Apollo Bay where he worked as a Carpenter. In the early 1970s Norm retired to Creswick via Ballarat, where he died in 1987.
