Reginald joined the 1st Machine Gun Battalion and left Adelaide on the Borda on 23 June 1915. His unit embarked at Alexandria for the Dardanelles on HMT Berrima on 1 August 1915, reaching Gallipoli on 4 August. Reginald was sent to France with his unit on 5 April 1916 where he was appointed Lance Corporal on 12 May. He was appointed Corporal on 29 June 1918 and Sergeant on 29 September. Reginald fought in France for the remainder of the war and returned to Australia on the Suffolk on 31 May 1919, being discharged on 1 August.
