Private James Benzie (Service No:2016) enlisted in the AIF on 8 November 1915 and embarked for Egypt with 2nd Australian Remount Unit Squadron 7. He served in Egypt with Mobile Veterinary Corps, 2nd Light Horse Regiment and 9th Mobile Veterinary Section. Private Benzie was attached to Australian Veterinary Hospital on 9 April 1919 when he embarked from Port Said for Brisbane on board HT City of Poona and was Discharged on 3 August 1919.

Born in 1869 in Aberdeen Scotland, James was the only child of James Benzie Snr (b1843 in Kincardinshire, Scotland) and Jessie Ann Ross (b1850 in Kincrdanshire, Scotland). James (a Mason) and Jessie married in 1869 in Aberdeenshire - by 1878 both James Snr and Jessie had died.

James arrived in Brisbane, QLD in 1889 on board the Jumna, and was working as a Carter/Lorryman in Brisbane in 1902 when he married Louisa Fanny Shove (b1881 in Surrey, England) - Louisa immigrated in 1900, arriving in Brisbane on board the Jumna. James and Louisa settled in Brisbane where James worked as a Carter/Van Driver/Lorryman and Groom. James died in 1958 and Louisa in 1966.
