Sergeant William John Sandiford (Service Nos:V90689/VX150137) initially served in the ACMF as a Sapper from 8 March 1943 to 28 March 1944, and was 'in the field' in Bougainville on 29 December 1944 when he enlisted in the AIF. Sergeant Sandiford served with 5 and 6 Mechanical Equiptment (ME) Spare Parts Section (graded Technical Storeman) in Bougainville (23 December 1944 - 27 December 1945) and was attached to 6 Australian Mechanical Equiptment Spare Parts Section at Discharge on 12 September 1946.

Bill (aka Billy) was born at Sea Lake, Victoria in 1919, eldest of three children of Herbert (Bert) John Sandiford (b1889 in Coleraine, Victoria) and Carrie (Doll) Adelaide Beatrice Pearce (b1895 in Tarnagulla, Victoria). Bert worked as a Plumber in Swan Hill and was a Blacksmith in Sea Lake in 1918 when he and Doll married. They settled in Sea Lake, where they raised their family and Bert was a Blacksmith before moving to Melbourne in the early 1940s - Bert worked as a Labourer.

Bill was a Steeplechase Jockey (National Champion) and worked as a Miller and Munitions Worker in Melbourne before enlisting in the Army in 1943. Following his Discharge, Bill settled in Melbourne where he worked as a Labourer until his death in 1970.
