James Dawson was the only son of Thomas and Margaret Dawson, of Rosalie, Brisbane, Queensland.
He was reported missing after the heavy fighting at Mouquet Farm in early 1916 which cost the 49th Battalion dearly in casualties. Dawson remained missing in the AIF records until he was confirmed as ‘killed in action’ by a court of enquiry held on 31 July 1917.
During 1925 the Imperial War Graves Commission was able to locate his remains, confirmed by the presence of his identity disc. The disc was returned to his parents in Brisbane in early 1926 and Dawson’s body was interred in the AIF Burial Ground Cemetery.
