Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Frank Edward Harvey enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 24 February 1916, aged 28. He embarked overseas on 7 September 1916 and arrived in England on 29 October, where he spent the next two months training on Salisbury Plain.

He left England and arrived in France on 30 December 1916, where he was transferred to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column on 9 January 1917. As a Driver, he was responsible for a team of horses or mules and would have supplied ammunition to the front-line artillery brigades during mid-April 1917 when the Germans attacked Lagnicourt.

At the Battle of Third Ypres, he would have come under direct German artillery fire during the Battles of Menin Road and Broodseinde Ridge in late September – early October 1917. His unit was also involved in supporting the defence of Hazebrouck during the German Spring Offensive in mid-April 1918.

He was promoted several times during 1918 – firstly to Bombardier (April), then Corporal (October) and finally to Sergeant on 2 December 1918. During the second half of 1918, he was involved in the supply of ammunition to the field artillery brigades as the allies pushed the Germans eastwards between August – October.

At war’s end, he embarked for Australia on 20 June 1919 and arrived in Melbourne on 6 August, where he was formally discharged from the AIF on 20 September 1919.
