Biography contributed by Sharyn Roberts

PHILLIP JOHN RUPERT STEELE who died on 8th January 1917 of wounds sustained in action in France was the second son of Mr. P. J. Steele. He was born in 1889 and entered the School in 1902.

He was in the athletic team in 1905 and in the crew in 1906.

He left that year and went into business with his father. He took an
interest in military matters from his school days and was appointed as 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery in June 1912, being allotted to the 7th Light Horse Brigade.

This experience stood him in good stead when he enlisted in September 1915, being promoted to Sergeant on entering camp. He arrived in Egypt in the same year and went to France in March 1916, gaining his commission on 1st April, and being promoted on the field on 14th October 1916 to Lieutenant in 4th Field Artillery Brigade. He was seriously wounded in the head on 15th November 1916 and lingered for a while, but eventually died in the 2nd British Red Cross Hospital at Rouen, and was buried in St. Sever Cemetery at Rouen.
