Staff Sergeant Ian McLaren (Service No:NX88389) enlisted in the Army as a Private/Gunner on 12 February 1942 and served with 71 Mobile Searchlight Battery RAA on Bathurst and Horu Islands as a Food Inspector. Staff Sergeant McLaren was attached to 71 Mobile Search Light Battery RAA at Discharge on 20 December 1945.

Ian was born in 1914 in Sydney NSW, third of five children of Sydney Daniel McLaren (b1876 in Sydney, NSW) and Ada Mary McDonald (b1878 in Sydney, NSW). Sydney (an Estate Agent) and Ada married in 1909 in Sydney, NSW where they settled and raised their family. Sydney worked as an Estate Agent and was Secretary of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron before his death in 1929.

Ian started work as a Clerk in Sydney, and in 1939 was a Health Inspector when he married Nellie Lillian Whiddon (b1916 in Sydney, NSW). Ian and Nellie settled in Sydney NSW where Ian was a Food Inspector and Building Surveyor in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Ian and Nellie remained in Sydney where Ian worked as a Manufacturer and Shopkeeper. Ian died in 2000 and Nellie in 2001.
