Frank Graham Newton served in both the South African (Boer) war as a Lieutenant S.N. 16 in the 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and in WW1 as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 5th Light Horse Regiment for which he was awarded a CBE and DSO.

After his Boer War service Captain Newton was Aide-de-camp to the Governor of Queensland from 1902-1905 and private secretary from 1905-1909. He was born on 5 October 1877 and married Kathleen Verney, sister of Ralph Verney, on 10 April 1912.
