Leslie's parents were Bernard James Grant and Mary Ursula Brennan. The Grant family had a successful butchery business in Redcliffe where Leslie was working at the time of his enlistment. Leslie married Josephine Smith in 1925 and later in life Leslie and his wife managed various Grant family enterprises including the Redcliffe Ice Works in MacDonnell Road.
