Dorothy was the second of six children of William (Will) George Macfarlane Metcalf (b1889 in Northumberland, England) and Elizabeth Mary Dyson (b1893 in Fremantle WA). Will (a Fireman) and Elizabeth married in 1915 in Fremantle WA where they settled and raised their family. Will had worked as a Fruiterer and Gardener in England before emigratiing in 1913 - he arrived in Fremantle WA on board the Orsova. Will was working as a Lumper at Fremantle Wharf and in 1943 he was killed by a load falling from a ship.

Dorothy was working as a Shop Assistant in Fremantle WA in February 1943 when she enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service (Private; Service No:WF94350). She was attached to 1 Ordnance Vehicle Park when she was Discharged in August 1946.

Returning to Fremantle WA, Dorothy was working as a Shop Assistant in 1948 when she married George William Johnson (b1923 in Fremantle WA), George (a Chairmaker) had served in the RAAF (Wireless Operator; Service No:427243). The couple settled in Fremantle where Dorothy worked as a Shop Assistant and Secretary and George as a Chairmaker and Manager. Dorothy died in 2016 and George in 2017.
