Husband of Edith Margaret O'Carroll nee Robertson of Payneham Road, Payneham, SA. Ernest and Edith married on 2 March 1914 in the Registry Office, Adelaide, SA.

At the time of enlisting Ernest was a member of the Payneham Rifle Club

Commenced return to Australia on 21 July 1917 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 13 September 1917 at Fremantle the transhipped to HT Nestor for onward travel to Adelaide disembarking on 20 September 1917.
