Killed in action just short of his 18th birthday. His older 2995 Private Alexander George Spall age 28 also of the 49th Battalion was killed by a shell on the same day during the Battle of Messines. Neither has a known grave. The sons of William George and Adelaide Louisa Spall, of 228 Bowen Terrace, New Farm, Brisbane Queensland.
